Project description
PCT has contracted to purchase offsets generated from Glenwood Valley Farms Ltd.’s greenhouse project. The greenhouse operator installed both an Enhanced Environmental System (EES) and energy curtains to help meet heating needs at the Glenwood greenhouses. These offset activities reduce annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions relative to the natural gas baseline.
How it reduces emissions
The EES system greatly increases heating and cooling efficiency, thereby reducing the energy demand to heat the greenhouses using natural gas. The energy curtains are deployed at night and during overcast conditions to insulate the building. The curtains reduce heat loss and the associated demand for energy to heat the greenhouse.
How Pacific Carbon Trust adds value
Installation of the EES and the energy curtains was not financially viable for the greenhouse operator and would not have occurred without funds from the sale of the offsets. These activities result in a real reduction of GHG emissions when compared to the business as usual approach.
