British Columbia has set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent by 2020. The government’s Climate Action Plan responds to this challenge.
The plan introduces numerous pieces of greenhouse gas reduction legislation to reduce emissions in all major sectors. It also provides information on the many ways British Columbians can reduce energy consumption and save money while reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.
Requiring Public Sector Organizations to become carbon neutral by 2010 is part of the Climate Action Plan. Pacific Carbon Trust’s role is to deliver offsets to the public sector so that they can offset greenhouse emissions that they were unable to reduce. Requirements for this program and the use of offsets are outlined in the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets Act.
To ensure quality offsets, the Ministry of Environment has developed the provincial Emission Offsets Regulation that establishes eligibility criteria for valid offsets. They are based on internationally recognized criteria, standards and terminology common to other offset systems.
British Columbia is also part of the Western Climate Initiative. This collaborative of four provinces and seven states is designing a regional market-based cap-and-trade system that will help reduce emissions in B.C. and ensure that the province can compete in the new carbon trading marketplace.
